Hail Damage remediation
Welcome to Hail Damage Remediation! From here on out we’ll let you know why hail is so catastrophic for your roof, what you need to do if you’ve experienced a recent hail storm, and how to prevent future hail damage.
Any instance of a hail storm is referred to as a “hail event.” If you’ve recently experienced a hail event, you may need to contact your insurance agent to inform them or schedule a roof inspection. Either the insurance agent or contractor will come take a look at your roof. Sometimes hail damage is easily seen and the inspector can see large fissures/cracks where the hail has hit or dimples where the hail has dented the insulation underneath.
Other times, it’s not visible immediately. Since right after the hail event occurs, the rain “cleans” the area and no debris are in the fissures/cracks. Over time, the fissures/cracks become more apparent as they fill with dirt. Signs of hail damage could also be located only on the backside of whatever roofing material is used, which means no one will be able to see the damage until some roofing pieces are removed.
If hail damage is ignored, then it will most likely develop into a bigger problem. To prevent future hail damage, if you have a shingle roof or are wanting install a new one, it’s recommended to install impact resistant asphalt shingles, commonly referred to as class 4 asphalt shingles (a premium upgrade), because when the hail hits this type of shingles is able to absorb more of the impact and reduce hail damage. Class 4 Asphalt Shingles decrease long-term maintenance and repair costs, lengthen the roof’s lifespan, increases resale value, and may even lower insurance rates. However, Class 4 Asphalt Shingles can be costly and, if insurance is involved, then most likely you will have to pay the difference for the upgrade in shingles.
Therefore, if you have a substantial amount of hail damage, then do replace the roof as needed. If you’re wanting to invest in a higher grade shingle, then do consider your options as Class 4 Asphalt Shingles isn’t the only option out there. It’s best to find out what type and grade of shingles you currently have and decide if you really want to upgrade and set a budget. Regardless of what you choose, the best thing to do in these cases of hail events is to simply inspect your roof and go from there.
