Metal vs Shingle Roofs

Time for a new roof, but can’t decide between a metal or shingle roof? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered about what to do and what to consider before you make your decision. Here’s 5 tips to help you choose between a metal and shingle roof:

  1. Set a Realistic Budget

A roof is a large investment and an important one. If you haven’t already, set a realistic budget. It can be a range between two numbers or your top dollar. If necessary, consider financing. Nowadays, many construction companies like us provide financing. Unfortunately, many salesmen tend to push metal roofs onto people, because metal roofs are typically more expensive than shingle roofs since they almost always last longer.

  2. Consider Duration

Depending on what type of shingles you use (3 Tab Asphalt or Architectural), shingle roofs can last 15-30 years compared to an estimated 40-70 years for metal roofs. At this point, ask yourself: “How long do I need the roof for?,” “Am I going to move?,” and “What would life look like in potentially 15-30 years or 40-70 years from now?”

  3. Recognize Value

Note, that on the marketplace, metal roofs do sell for more, but so does having just a “new” roof. As long as the roof’s new, the buyer will be happier, which increases sale prices. Metal roofs also tend to have more water runoff than shingle roofs. If the runoff poses a problem like flooding walkways, then you may be more likely to upgrade your gutters from 5 to 6 inches to help direct more water.

  4. Your Curb-Appeal

Want to stand out or blend in? Take this as your opportunity to improve your curb-appeal and chance to change it entirely. Look at your neighbor’s roofs and take notes of what you like/don’t like. If you want a certain look, shingles, even in bright colors like red, almost always have a more natural tone to them than metal.

  5. Look For The Nitty-Gritty

Do some research about metal and shingle roofs and look for the nitty-gritty. For example, a lot of people who have metal roofs are surprised when it rains at the “white noise.” Some people love it, others can’t stand it. If you’re confused about the “white noise,” it’s just a soft constant background sound of the rain as it hits the metal roof.

In the battle of roofs, the winner is. . . up to you. Ultimately, you decide your own roofing material. Just consider your budget, duration, value, curb-appeal, and the nitty-gritty details before you decide between a metal or shingle roof.
